Suck the Marrow
"I went into the woods because I wanted to live deliberately. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life...to put to rout all that was not life; and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived." ~Henry David Thoreau

Very funny stuff, Scott. I remember our Pong console (which btw, we had hooked up to one of those great old console TV's that was actually a piece of furniture) and our 2600 so fondly, but compared to now? Not so cool, I suppose. Why didn't they make the kids play Tank? Wasn't that the name of it? It was one of the oldest 2600 games, just two tanks shooting at each other, pretty much.
My favorite exchange in this article was:
EGM: Now imagine you've reached the 10th stage, and you're on your last life. Once you die and you put another quarter in, you don't just continue from there-you start all over.
Parker: Are you serious?
EGM: Yup. When you lose all your lives, you have to start over. You don't keep going.
Parker: And you guys back then were OK with this? But in our defense, you will be happy to hear this:
We are among those cruel parents who do not own any sort of a game system, so our son rarely has the opportunity to play any games at all. When we were back in Vancouver over Thanksgiving, I plopped him down in front of a bunch of retro games at KMJ's house and he had a blast. He played Galaga, Galaxia, Space Invaders, Pac-Man...can't remember what else. So the games were good then, it's just experience that makes them unsatisfactory to today's kids.
