Oh. My. Gosh.

We met Emily and Nicki today.

Oh.

My.

Gosh.

They are, quite simply, the two most beautiful, articulate, charming little girls I've ever, ever, ever met.

Emily has beautiful red hair and bright blue eyes. Nicki has gorgeous blonde hair with the same blue eyes.

We met with the team assigned to the girls (foster mom, case worker, social worker, attorney, therapist) for about an hour beforehand, which went very well. Then, we walked across the street to a meeting hall where we had pizza with the team and Em and Nicki and three of Jennifer's other foster kids.

They were...amazing. A little standoffish, which is an exceptionally good sign - healthy kids with appropriate boundaries are supposed to be a bit standoffish when they first meet people. We noticed them pretending to ignore us, but watching our every move when they thought we couldn't see them. Katrina asked Em where she learned her United States song, and she told us in school. The social worker asked her if she'd sing it for us, and she did!!! Then, she and her sister both sang us the song "America the Beautiful" ("Oh, beautiful, for spacious skies..."), and the whole group of kids sang us a slightly edited chorus of "The Barbie Song" by Aqua (instead of "undress me everywhere," the kids sang "go dancing everywhere." Much thanks to whoever changed that for the sake of cute little kids). Then, wonder of wonders, they all sang "Do Re Mi" from "The Sound of Music"!!!!! All the way through!!! They sang!!! Out loud!!! No fear!!! My brave girls!!!!!!!

We're taking them to dinner tonight, then we're spending the whole day with them tomorrow. We're going to this resort town called Ouray (You-ray) that has a hot springs, and we're going to spend the day swimming.

They're real. They're beautiful. They're smart.

They're ours.

With all due respect -- both to you and to Mrs. Coules -- the song with the line "Oh, beautiful, for spacious skies..." is not called "America"; it is called "America the Beautiful." The song called "America" begins, "My country 'tis of thee ..."
