Yikes!
I've got this little program from the Weather Channel that sits down in my tray and gives me the current temperature. (Unlike others, like the one called Weatherbug, the Weather Channel one isn't spyware).
Anyway, I was up here checking out my e-mail, and the little temperature icon, which is normally blue, suddenly began flashing red, and the ominous sound of thunder came from my speakers.
Curious, I clicked on the icon, and was told there is a "Severe Weather Alert" for my area. When I clicked to read it, this is what I got:
Severe Weather Alert from the National Weather Service
...GREATER PORTLAND METRO AREA-GREATER VANCOUVER AREA- INCLUDING THE CITIES OF... BATTLE GROUND... DOWNTOWN PORTLAND... DOWNTOWN VANCOUVER... HILLSBORO AND OREGON CITY 743 PM PST FRI JAN 14 2005
... WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT SATURDAY TO NOON PST SUNDAY FOR THE GREATER PORTLAND METRO AREA AND THE GREATER VANCOUVER AREA...
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN PORTLAND HAS UPGRADED THE WINTER STORM WATCH FOR THE NORTH WILLAMETTE VALLEY AND CLARK COUNTY IN SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON TO A WINTER STORM WARNING.
A MOIST AND WARMER AIR MASS ALOFT WILL SPREAD INTO NORTHWEST OREGON AND SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON EARLY SATURDAY MORNING. THIS AIR MASS WILL MOVE OVER COLDER LOWER LEVEL AIR. EXPECT A MIXTURE OF SNOW AND FREEZING RAIN TO COMMENCE SHORTLY BEFORE SUNRISE SATURDAY. FREEZING RAIN IS EXPECTED TO INCREASE SATURDAY MORNING... AND PERSIST THROUGH THE DAY. AREAS AWAY FROM THE COLUMBIA GORGE... SOUTH OF ABOUT OREGON CITY... WILL TURN TO RAIN BY MID TO LATE SATURDAY AFTERNOON. SIGNIFICANT ICING IS LIKELY... ESPECIALLY NEAR THE GORGE.
WARMER AIR WILL CONTINUE TO MOVE INTO THE AREA SATURDAY NIGHT AND SUNDAY... BUT AREAS OF FREEZING RAIN CAN BE EXPECTED TO PERSIST NEAR THE GORGE INTO SUNDAY MORNING.
ANY TRAVEL IS STRONGLY DISCOURAGED. IF YOU LEAVE THE SAFETY OF BEING INDOORS... YOU ARE PUTTING YOUR LIFE AT RISK.
When the weather dudes tell you to stay inside because you are "PUTTING YOUR LIFE AT RISK," that should be a hint and a half to put off that shopping trip!

Freezing rain is the worst.
I kinda think part of that warning equates to:
"DISCLAIMER: We have now told you the worst case scenario that could happen with these weather conditions. If you're a dork, and go out into the storm and end up dead or worse - injured and feeling litigious - don't come crying to us for your sue-happy-vengeance-jones. We warned you. And we will prevail in court!!!"
P.S. One of the live weather-webcams I looked at yesterday had icicles hanging in front of the camera. Brrr.
It's me again *waves frantically* you havent commented on my poems... Anyways, it was sooo cool this morning. you know how i live up on a big hill? well, i was going to feed my cats this morning (they're outdoor cats) and since i have a big yard, we also have a nice hill (which was SO fun last year with all that ice!) Well, i was going down the gravel path we have and it was so much fun sliding down cuz it was so icy and slick from the freezing rain! Then, later, me, my mom, and my brother went down to go get the mail (we share a "main driveway" with 3 other neighbors) and there is a big hill which is a total pain to go up after school with a heavy backpack on. And despite the freezing rain w/ the strong wind in your face, it was so much fun. Me and my brother were just sliding everywhere, and we found a leaf frozen in time. it was like a bent leaf w/ a quarter in. layer of ice on it. a piece of the leaf had fallen off and it had left a inprint in the ice, it was so cool!! I took some pictures of it, and i think i'll put it on my blog whenever i can. well, i'll see you on Tuesday (though i doubt we'll have school)
